Local Government Reform a firm number 2 to Toilets at Stirling

On the agenda at last nights ordinary Council meeting was, among others, the City of Stirling’s submission for Phase 2 of the ongoing proposed Local Government Reform changes.

It appears however that only Councillor Re was of the opinion that the submissions regarding legislation that will shape Local Government for the next 30 to 40 years were worthy of  debate.

To be fair, Councillor Re’s alternative motion that the item be held over to give Councillors a little longer to assess the proposed submission and perhaps engage in intelligent debate of their own was passed unanimously.

….

But toilets! now there is something worth debating, the `closed for 10 years` toilet block at Bradley Reserve was a hot topic in regard to a possible reopening, a shitty idea according to several Councillors who noted strongly that nobody wanted them reopened, one Councillor who appears to keeps a register of public toilet quality in the City did most definitely not want them reopened despite, like many other speakers not living in the Ward.

In fairness, Cllr Italiano agreed with Cllr Re that the area has changed for the better in the last 10 years and the arguments against were based (as so often in Stirling) on historical data.

Cllr Migdales original alternative motion was flushed given that it requested that `community consultation will be undertaken as part of the removal process` and  further reports be made to Council regarding concerns `in relation to the removal of the public amenity`, in other words knock it down first, ask questions later.

Mayor Irwin massaged this alternative motion in a manner that suggested consultation might be undertaken in a manner that did not require or suppose demolition.

That was sadly the most entertaining debate of the evening, the final list of motions to be considered at the next meeting also made no mention of the Local Government Reform , the Cities submissions or its importance to the future of Council, Councillors and their ratepayers.

Councillors, ultimately to their own benefit might be well advised to spend their next trip the the smallest room in the house checking out Larry Graham’s address made late last month at the Town of Cambridge which is available here
